Hello! I’m Katie Kamminga,

In January 2026, I will set off on an adventure that will be a truly life-changing experience.
I’m joining the Wylde Swan – the world’s largest sail training ship – for an unforgettable six-week voyage through the Caribbean Sea.

This journey, organised by Masterskip, is far more than just a trip. It’s an intensive learning and life experience that will help me discover not only the world but also myself.

The programme will challenge me in many ways:

  • I’ll be far from home, without internet or familiar faces around me, following my lessons while at sea.
  • I’ll learn navigation, watchkeeping, and teamwork.
  • I’ll push my limits – eventually even taking over the ship with my fellow trainees.

“It will be intense and sometimes tough, but also great fun and an incredible learning opportunity.”

Why Masterskip?

On board the Wylde Swan, together with my fellow trainees, teachers, and an international crew, we will form a strong bond over these six weeks.

We’ll go through ups and downs, learning to navigate many unusual situations. We will sail, hike, explore, and live together 24/7 for six weeks straight. Together, we’ll set rules that meet not only our own needs but also those of others, learn to set boundaries – and sometimes stretch them – and turn challenging moments into opportunities for growth, both individually and as a group.

I have always loved exploring new things and taking on challenges, even when they don’t look easy at first. When I discovered this opportunity, I instantly knew I had to go for it – I fell in love with the idea of this adventure right away!

“This journey will boost my self-confidence, broaden my view of the world, and strengthen my decision-making – giving me skills that will serve me for life, both for myself and in helping others.”

No Phones – Fully Present

One of the things that makes this journey so special is the phone policy. On board, we place our phones in a central locker. We can only access them once every two weeks.

This creates space for real connection – with each other, with nature, and with ourselves. We leave social media behind and truly disconnect from home, so we can make the most of this unique experience.

Of course, it’s still possible to stay in touch with home via Sailmail, and in emergencies the ship is always reachable. This policy, while a little daunting, is based on research and years of experience – and it helps to build an even stronger community and deeper personal growth.

As a teenage girl, I find this both exciting and a little nerve-racking – but I’m eager to take on the challenge and curious to see what new insights it will bring me!

Your Support Makes a Difference

The total cost of this journey is €8,950 (excluding flights and extra expenses such as vaccinations and pocket money).

I’m working hard to contribute myself – for example, by working in hospitality and selling second-hand clothing.

At the same time, I’m looking for people who are willing to help make this unique opportunity possible. Every contribution – big or small – brings me closer to this inspiring and life-changing adventure.
